User Experience, Frontend, Code and Life

Day 17 & 18 - Bug fixes and First Demo

life UserBit entrepreneurship

What are you working on?

I always have to stop and think about how to answer that question. It is not because I don’t want to talk about what I’m working on, but because the answer is necessarily long. I have to first explain what User Experience is (I don’t know a lot of people who are familiar with the field) or what Product Design entails. I have to then go into the problem that I’m trying to solve and then talk about UserBit itself.

I was spending some time with my mom this weekend when she expressed interest in knowing what I was working on. For a second I thought I’d say the usual:

Something to help designers

But this time was different, I wanted to see if I could do a decent job of explaining what I’m trying to accomplish to someone who doesn’t know anything about tech let alone UX. It took a good 10 minutes for me to go over what UX is in a nutshell and a demo of what I was building.

To my surprise, mom not only grasped the concept, she also suggested how it could improve things at her work place by going over some of her own pain points. I don’t know how much she will retain from that conversation, but I sure appreciated our discussion.

First real demo of UserBit

So I finally got to show my progress to someone in the field and get their opinion. I have already interviewed Rebecca in the past so I wasn’t worried about biasing her with my solution now. As I was going through the various features and talking about it, I realized I was quite nervous. It reminded me of when I was taking the driving test. Consciously I couldn’t think of a reason to be so anxious. I was more than happy to receive criticism of my work. I guess, the nerves were a sign of the significance of letting someone judge what you’re building for the very first time.

Fortunately, Rebecca was very excited about the progress. She gave me some constructive feedback but overall she really liked UserBit and couldn’t wait to get her hands on it. She said something that made me very happy:

I am excited to do more reserarch after looking at this

This is one of my most important goals - to not have UX professionals skip research in favor of the flashy parts (prototype, high fidelity mockups etc).

Good Weekend.
